The Professional Colorist Course is designed for Cosmetology students who want to learn new hair color techniques step by step, from the theory of how colors work to salon services. We mainly focus on the correct use of hair color products, use of different color lines, techniques and exposure of the results of your work on social media. All the techniques taught in our professional courses can be performed on a person as a client as long as you have a license as a cosmetologist  granted through the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. This program does not lead to a state license.

Professional Hair Color Course

  • Introduction to the world of Hair Color.

  • Salon Services: Hair Blow-Dry and Flat Ironing.

  • Basic color applications (virgin hair, gray hair, blonde hair and color touches).

  • Study and knowledge of the color wheel.

  • Theory of decolorizing agents and peroxide volumes.

  • Techniques of lights, highlights and wickes (on mannequin)

  • Hair Analysis and hair treatments.

  • Knowledge of the rules of color
  • Color consultation with a customer (development and complete diagnosis)

  • Investment breakdown to apply an ideal price.

  • Hair Color trends.

  • Universal gray coverage table.

  • Basic and advanced theory of color.

  • Color formulation theory.

  • Hair levels and colors.

  • Theory and practical class of technique of Balayage and Ombré.

  • Theory and practical class of fantasy color technique, Rainbow & Unicorn.

  • Theory and practical class of technique of highlights and baby lights.

  • Theory and practical class of technique of platinum blonds, silver, ice blonds and pastel blonds.

No, the professional hair coloring techniques course offered at AVL Academy is a 12-week course where you learn basic and advanced professional techniques, new color trends, product management, and professional salon services. If you want to obtain a cosmetology license, you need to contact state-accredited schools that offer training for obtaining a license in California or any state of your preference. Remember, these schools only provide training and ensure you meet the state requirements for obtaining your license. Once you complete your training, you must go to a state facility to take a final exam, and upon passing, you will be issued your license.

You need to obtain a cosmetology license. This license covers all aspects of providing services such as haircuts (both long and short), hairstyles, straightening, perms, hair coloring, makeup, facials, skin treatments, waxing, manicure, and pedicure. The only service you cannot perform is beard trimming or haircuts using a razor; for this, you need to obtain a barber license.

No, the student kit covers the first 5 introductory classes of the course. For the advanced technique classes (6-12), you will need to purchase an advanced professional color kit from the front desk of the academy. This kit includes various professional colors, professional salon shampoo and conditioner, hair treatment masks, special color shampoo, special color conditioner, lighteners, peroxide, and coloring tools such as brushes and bowls for mixing color.

There, you can get the information and requirements set by the state for obtaining a license in California. The state offers full-time or part-time training programs and apprenticeship systems. You should contact them for more information and guidance on the nearest school to your residence.

You will learn how to apply color in different hair styles and coloring techniques, basic color application including dyes and lighteners. Advanced techniques such as Balayage, ombré, highlights, baby lights, perfect blondes, and fantasy colors will also be covered. All techniques are practiced on mannequins.
